  The United Nations General Assembly designated 27 June as Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day (A/RES/71/279) in order to raise awareness of the contribution that small businesses make to sustainable, inclusive and resilient economic growth and, shared prosperity and decent work for all. Micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) account for 90% of businesses, 60-70% of employment, and 50% of GDP worldwide.

On the occasion of International MSME Day 2026 , The ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as key drivers to economic growth, innovation, and resilience in the region. Through the European Union (EU)-ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity Package – Trade (SCOPE Trade) project, ASEAN and the EU are working together to strengthen the trade policy environment, digital connectivity, and sustainable and resilient value chains that support MSME competitiveness and economic connectivity within ASEAN and between ASEAN and EU. The five-year SCOPE Trade project is implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC) in close collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC), ASEAN Sectoral Bodies, and ASEAN Member States. Human-Centered Entrepreneurship in an AI-Driven Future: Economic Empowerment for the Next Generation of MSMEs.

The 2026 International Forum on Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) will be the United Nations. The Forum is co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of Barbados, the State of Kuwait the Republic of Korea. It is convened by the International Council for Small Business (ICSB), which co-founded UN MSMEs Day in 2017. MSMEs account for more than 90 percent of businesses worldwide and generate the majority of global employment. The 2026 observance arrives at a moment when artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping production, finance, and labour, with profound consequences for the women CEOs, youth founders, and microenterprises who will define the next generation of the sector. The Forum places Human-Centered Entrepreneurship at the center of that transformation, recognizing that technology serves people, or it does not serve its purpose.
